![]() Janeites have been around in different forms for many years, but the rise of the Internet and, as an extension of this, fandom culture has led to a surprisingly strong legacy of Austen on popular sites, such as Twitter and Facebook. Austen’s fans are unique in how they straddle the line between the scholarly and recreational, and the unique workings of Jane Austen as both a part of popular culture and canonical literature is an essential aspect of studying her influence in a modern context. Through its legitimacy as the object of fandom (Jane Austen) being a canonical author, as well as it being made by and for women, the Jane Austen fandom has become a place where Austen fans can fangirl together in an isolated and protected place.
